Scientific Solutions ReAct system
(pictured is system, joystick and monitor with target display)
Scientific Solutions ReAct is a system to measure human reaction /
response time. The system is a complete turn-key solution that
can be used to measure the reaction time of people
in a controlled repeatable environment.
The system consists of a computer based workstation (computer,
keyboard, mouse, monitor) to which a joystick is connected.
Integrated in the workstation is a Scientific Solutions LabMaster DPCI
data acquisition card. The Scientific Solutions ReAct software
runs from
the workstation and presents targets in various locations on the
computer screen and measures the response time for the
subject-under-test to move the cursor onto the target using the
attached
joystick.
The Scientific Solutions ReACT system measures various parameters
including;
The test administrator easily defines the test using an EPIC script
file. By editing this EPIC file, the test administrator has
control over various test configuration conditions including:
The ReAct software is self-calibrating to accommodate various
joystick and screen resolutions without requiring redefining the test
configuration. This allows for similar test conditions across
different screen size and resolutions.
Data is collected and logged into a standard text format that can be
imported into other programs for graphing and analysis.
The workstation is implemented in a small footprint configuration
especially suited for the ReACT hardware and software. The system
is typically enhanced with integrated mass storage devices, network
connections, high resolution and fast response integrated 32-bit
graphics processor, Universal Serial Bus ports and IEEE 1394 firewire
ports. Joystick connections are typically in front for convenient
and easy attachment.
Previous response time measurement systems utilized an analog
joystick with an external amplifier for the x-axis and y-axis
signals. These amplified analog signals were then fed into a
LabMaster DMA product for Analog-to-Digital Conversion (ADC). The
digital information obtained from the A/D Conversion was then stored in
the computer. The
LabMaster DMA on-board counter/timers were used to precisely measure
the reaction times of the joystick movement.
This newer version of the ReAct system utilizes digital joysticks
instead of the older analog joysticks. With a digital joystick,
the Analog-to-Digital Conversion (ADC) of the x-axis and y-axis signals
occur in the joystick. This digital data is then transmitted into
the computer using a Universal Serial Bus (USB) port of the
workstation. The ReAct software uses the integrated LabMaster
DPCI to assist in making fast and precise time response measurements.
